I am delighted Stowmarket Station will receive funding in the next phase of the Access for All programme. This additional funding will make a huge difference to people’s lives across the constituency and is the culmination of a fantastic campaign locally that I am proud to have been a part of.
Disability should never be a barrier to people travelling on our transport network, be it for work, education or leisure. Stowmarket station having step-free access will make it safer for all passengers, particularly those with restricted mobility or parents with push chairs.
75% of rail journeys across the UK are now step-free. Over the next five years, journeys will be opened up across Britain as upgrades including footbridges and lifts make it easier for everyone to travel on the UK’s rail network.
Following nominations from the rail industry, stations were selected based on a range of criteria including footfall weighted by disability in the area, value for money, and local factors such as proximity to a hospital.
I also keenly supported a bid that was made for Needham Market Station. This has not been successful on this occasion, but I will continue to press the case with colleagues in Government and will support any future bids that are made.
I am determined that everyone has the same access to travel. Delivering step-free access at Stowmarket Station will help more people travel easily and without additional cost, time or stress.
