This week I met with British Sugar MD Keith Packer for an update on their work in Bury St Edmunds and beyond. We discussed challenges and opportunities and I was impressed to hear their commitment to decarbonisation, with a £5m investment. These measures will help to save 6000t of carbon per year. A further £20m decarbonisation project on site will begin next year, subject to planning approval, with steam evaporators expected to cut site carbon emissions by 20,000t - equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of around 2000 people.
British Sugar are also committed to supporting apprenticeships, and I hope that they will increase their commitment to offering apprenticeships, particularly in the engineering space. We also spoke frankly about fairness within the supply chain.
