Last week I visited West Suffolk Hospital’s Stroke Unit for an update on their work from Dr Abul Azim and his incredible team of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, researchers and data analysts.
During my visit I spoke to staff and patients and had a tour of the facilities that are on offer. The unit has an A rating, a rating they’ve held consistently for 5 years. One patient explained how cared for he felt how the experience had been frightening but how he was growing in confidence every day of his recovery.
We spoke about the different way West Suffolk approach stroke patients, making sure they capture the signs early with ambulance staff radioing ahead a specialist nurse at the ED entrance and fast tracking into treatment. They discussed how they keep themselves A rated and their ambitions for the new hospital and what they would like to see for rehabilitation services for patients. It was a truly impressive visit the staff do fantastic work to care for their patients, and I look forward to visiting again in the future.
