Jo Churchill MP has welcomed new announcement of dedicated funding to fill nearly one million potholes across the UK, including £1,384,000 to fill an estimated 26,113 potholes locally and across Suffolk. Local motorists will benefit from the dedicated funding after the Government announced that nearly £50 million of funding will be made available to local councils over the next twelve months. This is part of a wider move to fill 135,961 potholes across East of England with over one hundred councils in England receiving funding. The funding has been made available to councils as part of the Government’s £250 million Pothole Action Fund included in last month’s budget, which will see over four million potholes fixed by 2020/21, and is part of the Government’s plan to invest in infrastructure to secure a better future for our economy. Speaking about the announcement, Jo Churchill commented: “The state of our roads including the A14, is consistently raised with me by my constituents and remains a source of concern and frustration. I continue to campaign tirelessly for greater investment in our roads and recently spoke at a ‘No More Delays on the A14’ campaign event in order to move the campaign forward. I have also taken a village walk in Woolpit with local councillors which provided good insights into the local issues, on the ground. ‘This latest announcement is welcome news for families and businesses in Bury St Edmunds and Suffolk who rely on our roads to get around. It is essential that the upkeep of our rural roads, frequented by heavy goods vehicle for long haul, is maintained. This announcement recognises the importance of investment in our infrastructure locally, regionally and nationally, in an effort to support our small and medium sized businesses across the UK.”
